Bikini Season: Big Busted Girls vs. The Industry. A fight as old as time.
Bikini season is finally here.
Sunny days, warm weather, sea swims, beach days and the perfect excuse to live in swimwear. What’s not to love?
Well… there’s the underboob sweat. The cellulite. The sunburn. And, of course, the small matter of actually finding a bikini that fits.
And if you’re a big busted girl, you already know where this is going.
POV: You’re shopping for a bikini and find the perfect top.
You love the colour. You love the shape. You can already picture yourself wearing it on holiday.
Then you put it on.
Too small.
You size up and now the cups are too big around the band.
So you’re left with two choices: settle for the boring bikini that actually fits, or squeeze yourself into the cute one and spend the whole day wondering if you’re about to flash the entire beach.
Sound familiar?
For years, the fashion industry has been built around standardised sizing and smaller proportions. The problem is, women’s bodies aren’t standardised.
We come in different shapes. Different proportions. Different cup sizes.
So why are we still trying to fit everyone into the same bikini?
A fuller bust needs more than just a bigger version of the same bikini top.
An A cup and an F cup don’t need the same construction, the same support or the same fit.
It sounds obvious, but somehow the swimwear industry is still catching up.
A fuller bust needs thoughtful design. More support where it’s needed. Proper cup proportions. Adjustable straps. Secure fastenings. And, most importantly, a bikini that lets you actually enjoy wearing it.
It really shouldn’t be that complicated.
In the meantime, here are a few things we’ve learnt about finding swimwear that works for you.
Check the fit, not just the size.
A bikini size isn’t just a number or a letter. For a fuller bust, the right fit matters.
Look for cups that comfortably contain your bust without spilling over, digging in or leaving gaps. The band should feel secure without feeling restrictive, and your straps should support you without digging into your shoulders.
A good bikini should feel supportive, not like you’re fighting with it all day.
Mix and match.
One of the best things about buying swimwear separately is that you don’t have to be the same size on top and bottom.
Maybe you need more room in the bust but prefer a smaller brief. Maybe you love one style of top with a completely different bottom.
Mix it up. Your bikini doesn’t have to be a matching set.
Be careful with strapless.
Strapless swimwear can look amazing, but if you’re planning on swimming, diving, dancing or generally doing anything other than lying perfectly still, make sure it’s actually going to stay where you put it.
If you love the strapless look, try a style with removable straps. You get the best of both worlds. Strapless when you want it, extra support when you need it.
Find your style.
Not every style will be for you, and that’s completely fine.
Think about your shape, your personal style and, most importantly, what makes you feel good.
Try something different. Try the colour you normally wouldn’t pick. Try the neckline you’ve always thought wasn’t for you.
You might find your new favourite.
Wear it with confidence.
Because the perfect bikini isn’t the one that hides your body.
It’s the one that lets you forget about your body and enjoy the day.
Go swimming. Get in the sea. Lie in the sun. Eat the ice cream. Take the photos.
Your bikini should keep up with you, not hold you back.
